Osuchukwu Backs Flying Eagles to Soar in Tricky U-20 AFCON Group

Former youth international confident Nigeria will overcome Tunisia in opening match

Former Nigeria youth international, Chidi Osuchukwu, has voiced his confidence in the Flying Eagles ahead of their opening match against Tunisia at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), describing the encounter as a stern test for the team but one they are prepared to win.

Speaking ahead of the high-stakes Group B clash, Osuchukwu acknowledged the strength of the North African opponents but stressed the importance of starting the tournament with a win.

“It’s going to be a big game, a big test for the players, especially playing against these North Africans. It’s going to be a difficult one, but with the team’s preparation, coupled with the friendly games they’ve played, I’m sure they will start on a winning note,” Osuchukwu said.

The Flying Eagles, led by Coach Aliyu Zubairu, find themselves in a challenging group that includes Tunisia and two other strong sides yet to be named in this round of matches. Expectations are high as Nigeria looks to not only qualify for the semifinals and book a place at the FIFA U-20 World Cup but also mount a serious challenge for the continental title.

Osuchukwu, who featured for Nigeria at the youth level, encouraged the team to rise to the occasion and showcase the fruits of their preparation and discipline.

“So they have to do their best and show us what they’ve actually done, their training, and all that. This year, we’ll have to prove it. So it’s going to be a tricky one. I believe we will come through,” he added.

Nigeria has historically enjoyed success at youth levels, and supporters are hopeful this new generation will uphold that tradition. A positive result against Tunisia would be a major boost toward advancing from the group and realizing their World Cup ambitions.
