Super Eagles’ sensation, Victor Osimhen has disclosed that he was able to score twice against Gabon in the extra time of Thursday’s 2026 World Cup play-off because he promised to correct a chance he had missed earlier on.
Sports247 reports that Osimhen could have wrapped the game up at 2-1 for the Eagles had he scored from a one-on-one chance he had with the goalkeeper in the last minute of regulation time, but he skewed the opportunity wide.

However, rather than allow the missed chance weigh him down, the Galatasaray of Turkey hitman stormed back with determination to make up for the missed sitter, following which he thanked his teammates for believing in him.
Osimhen further disclosed that his years of playing at the top level of football also came in handy, as he has faced similar situations in which he failed to convert begging chances but he would then stay focused in order to make amends.
He affirmed, “I’m a professional player, and I’ve been in the game for a long time. I’ve played against some very intimidating teams where I miss good opportunities. Sometimes, it happens like that.
“As a striker, sometimes I score a goal that no one believes; but I could also sometimes lose the one that people think I’m going to score. That doesn’t take away what I can do.”
The in-form striker, who previously played for Ultimate Strikers of Lagos, VfL Wolfsburg of Germany, Racing Charleroi of Belgium, Lille Metropole of France and SSC Napoli of Italy, further revealed, once he loses a chance, he just tries to maintain the right mentality that his goals would still come.
“I always have this mentality that, even if I miss a good opportunity, so long as the game keeps going on, I will try to make sure I correct it by still scoring later.
“That’s what I always tell my teammates. We have to keep trying. So, I first told them I’m sorry and then I promised that I was going to correct it in extra time.
“I’m happy that I did it, and kudos to the guys who gave me the assists to score the two goals. I’m also happy about the mentality of the team … all of us,” Osimhen posited.
