Oshaniwa, who represented Nigeria at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, said he sees striking similarities between Chelle and the late Stephen Keshi, particularly in their approach to squad building and player management.
“When I watch Chelle, I see some similarities with Keshi,” Oshaniwa said. “They both believe in building a team with the players available rather than making excuses.”
Chelle has come under scrutiny in recent months amid contract discussions and speculation about his future, but Oshaniwa believes stability is crucial for progress.
“He understands the players and knows how to get the best out of them,” he noted. “That kind of continuity is important.”
The former defender praised Chelle’s tactical flexibility and willingness to trust emerging talents.
“He is not afraid to give opportunities. He blends experience with youth, and that’s how you build a strong national team,” Oshaniwa added.
Drawing comparisons to Keshi, who led Nigeria to AFCON glory in 2013, Oshaniwa emphasized the importance of identity and unity.
“Keshi built a team spirit that carried us far. Chelle is trying to create that same bond,” he explained.
Oshaniwa urged the Nigeria Football Federation to prioritize long-term planning over short-term reactions.
“We must avoid constant changes. If we want results, we must give the coach time,” he said.
According to him, Chelle’s work so far proves he deserves trust.
“He is the right man for the job. I hope he stays and continues what he has started,” Oshaniwa concluded.
