Ekiti State Technical Advisor on Sports Development, Dr Olusola Osetoba, has reinforced the role of sports in youth development by leading a major anti-drug awareness campaign in Emure Local Government Area to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The sensitisation drive saw youths across Emure embark on a colourful but purposeful placard walk through major streets, delivering a clear message against substance abuse and promoting healthy, goal-driven lifestyles among young people.

The campaign was organised by the Nigerian Youth Congress, Emure Youths Movement and Students’ Union leaders, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
It attracted students, youth groups, civil society actors and community stakeholders, all united in the fight against drug abuse.
Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials with strong awareness messages were distributed during the rally, turning the streets into platforms for public education on the dangers of illicit drugs and substance abuse.
Addressing participants, Dr Osetoba described drug abuse as a growing public health and developmental challenge among youths, stressing that the fight must be sustained and evidence-driven.
“Drug abuse is not just a moral issue; it is a scientific, social and developmental challenge,” she said. “If we want a strong sporting culture, productive youths and a safe society, we must tackle addiction through education, early intervention and continuous community engagement.”
She highlighted sports as one of the most effective tools for prevention, noting that organised sporting activities instil discipline, purpose and positive peer influence, while keeping young people engaged and away from harmful habits.
Dr Osetoba added that Ekiti State’s sports development agenda is intentionally aligned with youth-focused programmes designed to promote healthy living and social responsibility.
She commended the NDLEA, youth organisations and student leaders for taking ownership of the campaign, emphasising that youth-led advocacy remains vital in winning the fight against drug abuse.
The Emure rally further underscored Dr Osetoba’s expanding influence beyond sports administration, as she continues to integrate sports development, youth empowerment and public health advocacy.
As the march concluded, the message remained clear across Emure and Ekiti State at large: the pursuit of sports excellence and youth development must go hand in hand with a firm stand against drug abuse, with Dr Olusola Osetoba playing a central role in driving that vision.
