Sports247 reports that Obafemi, who was part of Nigeria’s gold medal-winning under-23 squad at Atalanta ’96 Olympics, took another look at AFCON 2025 and posited that many players in the Eagles’ squad surprised him.
The fair-skinned product of Stationary Stores FC of Lagos reflected, “I know there are some of our players who are up there and will always do well.
“I knew those who would make us proud, but there were some who I was sceptical about their performances. I wasn’t sure about how well they were going to perform.
“Like the right-back (Osayi) and left-back (Bruno). It just shows that we have talents. So, we should keep faith in these boys, and we must not underrate anybody. That is the big lesson I learnt from this AFCON.”
Obafemi, who played for FC Toulouse of France as well as Fortuna Koln, Fortuna Dusseldorf, Reautlingen, and Augsburg of Germany during his active days, concluded with a view that all the lads who won bronze for Nigeria at AFCON 2025 should be trusted to do even better in days to come.
“I saw the high level of cohesion among our players, and I enjoyed the way they played … especially Osayi and Bruno. For me, they were the revelations of this tournament. They did well.
“I initially thought we would have problems in the absence of Ola Aina at the right-back position; but we saw that we have many boys who are good.
“So, let’s trust them, because we have every reason to be happy with their performances,” submitted Obafemi, who is now coach at a lower division league club in Lagos.
