FC Robo Queens owner and coach Emmanuel Osahon has stressed the importance of paying attention to the physical and emotional needs of female footballers, particularly how menstrual cycles can affect their performance on the pitch.
Speaking in an interview with Sports247, Osahon explained that developing female players requires more than football training, as coaches must also understand the personal challenges that come with managing a women’s team.
According to him, menstrual periods can have an impact on how a player performs, making proper care and support an important part of player development.
“Managing girls is different,” Osahon explained, highlighting the need for coaches to understand what female players go through physically and emotionally.
He noted that players need to learn how to manage the effects of their menstrual cycles while coaches and team officials also have a responsibility to provide the necessary support.
Osahon believes effective period management can help players remain comfortable and focused during training and matches, ultimately allowing them to perform at their best.
His comments highlight an often overlooked aspect of women’s football, where player welfare extends beyond fitness, tactics and technical development.
For Osahon, who has spent years developing young female footballers at FC Robo Queens, understanding these needs is part of creating an environment where players can grow both as athletes and individuals.
He also reflected on the backgrounds of some of the players who have passed through his football programme, noting that some came from difficult environments and required guidance, discipline and support alongside their football development.
The coach’s approach has contributed to FC Robo Queens’ reputation as a talent-development club in Nigerian women’s football. The club has produced players who have gone on to represent Nigeria at different levels, including established Super Falcons players.
Osahon’s message is that developing women’s football in Nigeria should not be limited to putting players on the pitch. Their welfare, health, education and individual circumstances must also be considered if young talents are to reach their full potential.
