Organisers Announce Merger, Make Other Critical Changes In Nigeria League Third Tier

The organizing body of the Nigeria third-tier division, Nationwide League One(NLO) have announced some drastic changes ahead of the 2022/2023 season of the NLO, Sports247 can report.

Some crucial decisions pertaining to the promotion and relegation of teams from the division were made at the end of the mid-season meeting on developments in the league, Board of Directors, and Management of the NLO.

One of the new changes will include the merging of the Nationwide League Three with the Nationwide League Two at the end of the current football season and the plan to make Division Two a Youth League, only for U-19 players from 2023.

As for Division one, 8 teams will be promoted to the Nigeria National League(NNL) while 8 teams also will be relegated to Division Two.

Any team that is relegated from Division One to Division Two will only be allowed to retain a minimum of 10 players that are above 19 years in their teams.

However for Division Two,16 Teams will be promoted to Division One, while the same number of teams will be relegated from Division Two to State League, and from the State League, 16 players will be promoted to NLO Division Two League.

While The Board also approved the promotion to Division One all the second-best position teams in the just concluded Division Two League at the event.

Lastly, a strong warning was also issued to clubs stating that any promoted team to the Nigerian National League (NNL) that sells off its slot shall not be allowed to return to NLO with the same name.

At the end of the meeting, a vote of confidence was passed on the Secretariat for the good work of managing the League to satisfaction.
