Coventry City returned to the summit of the Sky Bet Championship after producing a dominant 3–1 victory over Middlesbrough under the lights at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Monday night.
The fixture marked a significant moment for Nigerian football as Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka made his first start for the Sky Blues following his winter loan switch from Brentford.

Slotting seamlessly into Coventry’s midfield, Onyeka delivered a high-energy and disciplined performance, providing defensive cover, pressing aggressively and helping his side control key phases of the contest against Middlesbrough.
While United States striker Haji Wright grabbed the headlines with a clinical hat-trick, Onyeka’s contribution proved equally vital in maintaining Coventry’s tempo and structure throughout the match.
Head coach Frank Lampard singled out the Nigerian for special praise after the game, describing his debut as a strong indicator of what he brings to the squad.
“His power in winning the ball, his timing in pressing and his quality in duels stood out,” Lampard said. “He understands the game well and showed great personality in midfield.”
Onyeka was cautioned midway through the first half following a challenge, but the booking did little to disrupt his rhythm as he continued to impose himself physically and tactically until the final whistle.
Lampard also highlighted the difficulty of adapting quickly to Championship football, noting that Onyeka’s ability to settle immediately reflected his experience and professionalism.
Coventry’s victory not only restored them to the top of the table but also strengthened belief that Onyeka could play a key role in their promotion push.
His loan agreement reportedly includes an obligation to buy clause, which would be activated should the club secure promotion to the Premier League.
