Onyali Rallies Support for Nigeria’s 2030 Commonwealth Games Bid

Two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Mary Onyali has thrown her weight behind Nigeria’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, declaring that the country is ready to stage the prestigious event.

Onyali, who won gold medals in athletics during her illustrious career, said hosting the Games would be a landmark moment for Nigeria and a chance to showcase the nation’s growth to the world.

“Nigeria is ready. We have the facilities, the talent, and the passion for sports,” Onyali said. “The Commonwealth Games would not just be about competition, but also about legacy — inspiring a new generation of athletes, boosting our economy, and improving our international image.”

She called on the Commonwealth Sport Association to make what she described as the “right call” by awarding the bid to Nigeria. “We have waited a long time for an opportunity like this. Hosting the Games in 2030 will prove that Africa is capable of delivering world-class sporting events. I strongly believe Nigeria deserves this chance.”

Onyali also argued that hosting would accelerate sports development across the country. “It will force us to invest more in infrastructure and grassroots programmes, which will benefit our athletes for years to come. It will also put Nigerian sports administrators under the spotlight, and that accountability is needed.”

The Olympian, who also competed at five Summer Olympics, expressed confidence in the country’s ability to meet international standards. “We have staged successful tournaments in the past, including the All-Africa Games. The Commonwealth Games is bigger, but we can rise to the challenge. I believe Nigeria will deliver.”

Nigeria’s bid for the 2030 Games comes as part of a broader ambition to host more international sporting events.
