Former Super Eagles striker Julius Aghahowa has stressed that only consistent positive results will restore the confidence of Nigerian fans in the national team, Sports247 reports.
The ex-international, known for his electrifying pace and signature backflips, shared his thoughts amid the team’s ongoing friendly campaign and preparations for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Aghahowa noted that fans are tired of excuses and expect performances that match the pedigree of Nigerian football. For him, winning games is not about star power, but about grit, unity, and an unwavering desire to succeed on the pitch.
“Right now, the only thing that can bring the fans back fully behind the Super Eagles is winning consistently,” Aghahowa said. “It’s not just about calling up big names or those playing in top leagues. It’s about choosing players with the hunger and heart to win.”
The former Wigan and Shakhtar Donetsk striker also emphasized that effort and passion must be evident, especially in international friendlies like the recent Unity Cup and the upcoming match against Russia. He believes these fixtures are more than just tune-ups — they are tests of character.
“You can’t play as if nothing is at stake just because it’s a friendly. Every game must mean something,” he added. “This is where the coach must demand not only tactical discipline but mental toughness. We need players with a heart of steel, not just famous faces.”
Nigeria recently won the Unity Cup for the second time, defeating Jamaica 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. The team now faces Russia on Friday in what is expected to be another key opportunity to build momentum ahead of September’s World Cup qualifiers.
As Julius Aghahowa put it, “The badge on your chest is not just decoration. It represents millions of people — and you must give everything, every time.”
