One Athlete, Big Questions! Nigeria’s Lone Star At World Indoors Sparks Concern — ‘Why So Few?’

Nigeria’s participation at the World Indoor Championships in Poland has raised eyebrows after the country was represented by just one athlete — a situation that has triggered concern among sports stakeholders and exposed deeper issues within the system.

That lone representative was Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, one of the nation’s most consistent performers in athletics.

While his presence ensured Nigeria had at least a footprint at the global event, many have questioned why a country with such a rich pool of talent could only muster a single competitor.

Providing insight into the situation, athletics coach Olalekan Soetan pointed to a combination of logistical and structural challenges.

According to him, the issue was not necessarily a lack of talent, but rather a lack of participation interest among athletes.

He explained that many Nigerian athletes are based in the United States, where their training and competition schedules are largely dictated by collegiate commitments. As a result, events like the World Indoor Championships often clash with academic calendars, making participation difficult.

“There has to be proper planning,” Soetan suggested, noting that without alignment between national sporting bodies and athletes’ schedules, opportunities like this will continue to be missed.

Beyond scheduling conflicts, he also highlighted potential visa-related challenges, which have historically affected Nigerian athletes traveling for international competitions. Such hurdles, he implied, can discourage participation even when athletes are willing.

The situation has sparked a broader conversation about how Nigeria manages its athletics programme. Critics argue that better coordination, early planning, and stronger support systems could significantly improve participation levels at global events.

For a country that has produced world-class athletes and consistently competed at the highest level, sending just one representative to a major championship is seen by many as a worrying sign.

It also raises questions about long-term development strategies and whether enough is being done to support athletes both at home and abroad.

As Nigeria looks ahead to future competitions, stakeholders insist that lessons must be learned. Because while individual brilliance can shine, global success in athletics ultimately depends on depth, preparation, and strong institutional backing.

And for now, the spotlight remains not just on the athlete who showed up — but on the many who didn’t.
