The recently renovated Olympic Sports Complex at Amuwo-Odofin Industrial Estate, Lagos is scheduled to come alive this Saturday with a female gender event billed to hold there as the latest effort at boosting support for the girl child in Nigeria.
Sports247 gathered that the now attractive arena located near the headquarters of God’s Chosen Charismatic Church, Ijesha Express, is expected to receive many personalities for the event packaged by Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) women commission.
The event, which will climax the commission’s annual programme with two major initiatives, will focus on steps towards empowering the girl-child as well as strengthening media roles, ahead of the 2026 Women in Sports Leadership Training/Seminar for Journalists from October 22-24 in Abuja.
The commission will also bring together more than 100 girls from secondary schools across Lagos State, along with young female athletes, coaches and stakeholders from the sports, education and advocacy sectors under the theme ‘Her Voice, Her Future: Investing in Girls Through Sports and Education.’
NOC president, Engineer Habu Gumel noted that programme is aimed at highlighting the rights of young females, while using sports and education as tools for empowerment, leadership, personal development, keeping girls in schools and creating opportunities via digital technology.
With focus also on the United Nations backed International Day of the Girl Child coming up on Sunday; October 11, the upcoming event will also draw attention to rights, opportunities and challenges facing young females globally, under the tag ‘End Child Marriage, Invest in Girl Child.’
Gumel thanked the Women Commission for its initiatives, even as he stressed that empowering a girl through education and sports goes beyond the individual, as it gives her confidence, recognition, privileges and a vibrant platform to shape her future.
“We believe that when you invest in a girl’s education and empower her through sports, you are not just educating one girl – you are giving her a voice to shape her own future.
“Our theme ‘Her Voice, Her Future’ is a call to replace child marriage with classrooms and playgrounds where girls can learn, lead, and thrive,” the NOC president submitted.
Sports247 gathered further that the commission made the seminar open to both male and female journalists due to its recognition that they all play a critical role in shaping public narratives and advocating greater opportunities for girls and women in sports.
