Doko, who is the defending champion, is expected to again lead the charge from Nigeria, which won the Best Country Award at the last edition of the elite competition in Kigali, Rwanda two years ago.
The title holder and all other players in the Nigerian team will, however, have to redouble their efforts this year, as the competition has been upgraded as a high-stakes showdown, with a total prize pool of $35,000 on offer.
Organisers disclosed that the gathering of Africa’s finest wordsmiths is scheduled for October 18th to 25th at Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Monrovia, a setting for major battles of intellect, strategy, wit and nerves across 32 grueling rounds.
A promotional statement added, “Organised by Pan African Scrabble Association, the championship will also see prizes distributed among the top 20 finishers, further intensifying the race for the podium.
“With $10,000 earmarked for the eventual champion, the competition is expected to attract top-ranked players from across Africa, all vying not just for prize money but continental supremacy and ranking points.
“Beyond the board, the tournament represents another milestone in the growth of Scrabble on the continent, with Liberia stepping into the spotlight as host of one of Africa’s most prestigious mind sports events.”
