Olopade Resigns After NNL’s Failed Promotion Plan

Former commissioner for sports in Ogun State, Honorable Bukola Olopade has resigned from his position as chief executive officer of Nigerian National League (NNL), due to their inability to push through a plan for eight teams to be promoted from the lower division.

Sports247.ng gathered that Olopade threw in the towel after League Management Company (LMC) and club owners in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) rejected the promotion of eight teams to the top flight.

It meant Olopade kept true to his vow to quit if the NNL Congress’ resolution in favour of eight teams being promoted to the NPFL was not accepted.

With Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) also directing the NNL to go ahead with their promotion play-offs, from which only four teams would make the elevation, Olopade reckoned his role as NNL chief executive had been undermined.

He subsequently addressed an open letter to NFF president, Amaju Pinnick via social media to reveal his decision to resign, while also wishing the soccer boss more success in years to come.

Olopade stated: “Mr President, I respect the decision of the highest body in football but I now humbly inform you first through this medium and subsequently through an official letter of my resignation from the position of the CEO of the Bet9ja NNL.

“Mr President, I once more thank you for the opportunity and also want to emphasize here that I have been very proud of your good work with football not only in Nigeria but in Africa and beyond, that feeling of pride for your excellent statesmanship in football remains with me as I wish you more fruitful years in your stewardship of football in Nigeria and the world at large.”
