The director-general of Nigeria’s National Sports Commission (NSC), Honourable Bukola Olopade has declared that the umbrella body’s focus is for all events that Nigerian athletes can participate in to improve the country’s international image.
He pointed out that the NSC’s current tenure is not focused on football alone, as he insists they are putting into consideration all sports in equal dimensions.
While stressing the NSC’s all-encompassing approach, Olopade also showered encomiums on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for showing his special interest in various issues relating to sports in the country.
While using this weekend’s Davis Cup playoff ties in Lagos as an example of the giant strides being achieved by Nigeria, Olopade said the renewed focus on sports under President Tinubu continues yielding visible results for the country.
The D.G’s special assistant on media, Kola Daniel added in a press statement that Olopade described hosting the Davis Cup as a milestone that underscores growing confidence in the country’s sports administration.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Davis Cup World Group II Playoffs tie between Nigeria and Uzbekistan at Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Olopade further praised President Tinubu for his commitment to sports growth through policy direction, administration and funding.
Olopade said, “We thank President Bola Tinubu for acknowledging the fact that something new is happening in our sports. It is also about the personal interest he has shown in sports, expressed through administration and funding.”
While also highlighting the NSC’s broader vision, Olopade emphasized inclusivity and structural reforms across the sports ecosystem.
Olopade further pointed out, “Nigerian youths ply their trade in over 50 sports, and our initiative at the NSC is to support all sports. We are glad to be hosting the Davis Cup after 19 years.
“We have opened leadership at sports federations to men and women of timber and calibre to push our sports to global standards. This is what Victor Ochei is doing with tennis, and we thank him for bringing this competition to Nigeria.”
Daniel also chipped in, “The Davis Cup tie marks another important chapter in Nigeria’s renewed push toward international competitiveness, reflecting the Tinubu administration’s broader agenda of using sports as a platform for youth development, national pride, and global engagement.”
