Former Super Falcons striker Gift Okunwa-Igunbor insists that, while Nigeria remains a powerhouse in African women’s football, the rapid improvement of other nations means the Falcons must sharpen their preparations ahead of the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
“As an African, Nigeria is a giant in female soccer,” Okunwa-Igunbor said. “But no other country wants to relent because every country wants to make sure that they beat Nigeria.
In so doing, Nigeria will level up their performances and then prove to the whole of Africa they are prepared.
But notwithstanding, I know when AFCON comes, we are going to showcase ourselves and create more impact so that we can be able to lift the AFCON.”
Her remarks come as the Falcons seek a record-extending tenth continental crown. Okunwa-Igunbor stressed that a rigorous build-up, including quality friendlies and focused training camps, will be crucial if Nigeria is to fend off increasingly tough competition and claim the title once again.
