Former Super Eagles assistant coach Sylvanus “Quicksilver” Okpala has declared that Nigeria possesses more than enough quality to win the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, boldly stating that the current squad is stronger than the team that lifted the trophy in 2013.

Okpala, who was part of the coaching crew during Nigeria’s triumphant AFCON run under Stephen Keshi, said the Super Eagles of today boast far more players operating consistently at high levels in Europe compared to previous generations.
“This team is stronger than what we had in 2013. Back then, we used many home-based players and still won. Now we have players performing every week in top clubs,” he said.
He insisted that with such talent at their disposal, Nigeria must travel to Morocco with a winning mentality, not merely hoping to progress from the group stage.
“Nigeria should go to AFCON to win, not just to participate. We have what it takes,” Okpala emphasized.
The former midfielder recalled how, in 2013, the squad was doubted because many players came from the domestic league, yet they showed hunger, unity, and discipline to conquer Africa.
“People forget that in 2013, many players were home-based. But they fought with passion. That mentality is what wins tournaments,” he noted.
Okpala said the current squad, filled with established European professionals, must replicate that mind-set and approach every game with purpose and intensity.
“Quality is good, but mentality matters even more. The players must show desire, discipline, and commitment in Morocco,” he said.
He added that Nigeria’s reputation as a football giant demands high expectations.
“When Nigeria plays AFCON, we aim for the title. Anything less is not good enough for a country like ours,” he stated.
With Nigeria placed alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania in Group C, Okpala believes the Super Eagles have a clear path to the knockout stages, if they avoid complacency.
“We have the better squad. But we must stay focused and treat every opponent with respect,” he warned.
Okpala concluded with a rallying call, “The opportunity is there. The talent is there. Nigeria must make it count.”
