Okocha Backs Super Eagles To Soar Again: “2026 World Cup Dream Still Alive”

Despite Nigeria’s shaky start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, former Super Eagles captain Augustine “Jay-Jay” Okocha remains steadfast in his belief that the national team can still secure a spot on football’s biggest stage.

With only one win in six qualification matches, the Super Eagles sit fourth in Group C with seven points—six adrift of leaders South Africa. Yet, Okocha insists that the dream of qualifying is not over, citing the possibility of reaching the tournament through the playoff route.

“If I say we don’t have any chance, I will be telling lies,” Okocha said. “We are not in the best position, but we still have a chance of qualifying—whether through playoffs or whatever means. One good thing about football is that there’s always hope.”

The new CAF qualification format allows only group winners to qualify directly, while the four best second-placed teams move into a playoff to determine who advances to the inter-confederation playoffs. For Nigeria, that means the remaining fixtures are do-or-die.

Okocha believes the current squad, under coach Eric Chelle, has what it takes to deliver.

“If we want to give ourselves any chance of qualifying, we must focus on winning all our remaining games,” he added. “I have faith in this team. They can do it.”

Upcoming clashes against South Africa and Rwanda will be crucial. A strong showing could reinvigorate Nigeria’s campaign and keep hopes alive for a return to the World Cup after missing out in 2022.

“We know how important football is in Nigeria. It brings us together as a people. I hope this team finds the strength to push through and qualify,” Okocha said.

As fans hold their breath and rally behind the team, Okocha’s confidence offers a timely boost—reminding Nigerians that in football, hope is often the spark that leads to glory.
