Plateau State suffered a 35–25 defeat in the women’s handball event at the Gateway Games 2024, falling to a well-organized home side who secured a place in the next round with their second consecutive win.
Ogun State had earlier opened their campaign with a convincing 32–20 victory over Kogi at the Alake Sports Center in Ijeja, Abeokuta, and carried that same form into their clash with Plateau.
Elsewhere, Sokoto State pulled off a surprise win over Edo, edging a tightly contested game 22–20. Sokoto led 12–8 at halftime and resisted Edo’s second-half push to register their first major victory of the tournament.
Lagos continued their dominant run with a commanding 33–13 performance against Bauchi. They took a 19–5 lead into the break and maintained control through precise passes and fast counterattacks.
In one of the day’s most thrilling encounters, Oyo edged Delta 35–34 in a nail-biting finish. Trailing 13–14 at halftime, Oyo fought back with fierce determination to clinch the narrow win in the final seconds.
