Coach Olusegun Abidina has praised the determination and resilience of his Ogun State female volleyball team after they staged a dramatic comeback to beat Rivers in a five-set thriller at the Gateway Games 2024.
The Ogun team fought back from two sets down to win 3-2, with set scores of 20-25, 18-25, 25-16, 25-22, 15-12. Rivers, packed with national team players, dominated early, but Ogun turned the match around with strong teamwork and smart tactics.

“We played against the toughest team in the competition; most of them are national players. This victory means a lot to us and puts us in strong contention for the Gold,” Coach Abidina said after the match.
He added that the tournament’s league format means Ogun must keep winning to secure a place in the semi-finals. “We’re focusing on topping the group and securing our spot in the semi-finals. We’re not underestimating other teams, but this felt like a final.”
Coach Abidina also pointed out Kaduna and Oyo as teams to watch, saying they are strong rivals in the race for the volleyball Gold.
The team captain also praised the group’s unity and focus, calling the win a result of team spirit and determination.
With this big win, Coach Abidina and his team have shown they are serious contenders at the festival.
