OGUN2025: “I’m Smiling At Last”—Caroline Albert Overcomes Pain And Doubt To Win Triple Gold For Bayelsa

The +87kg weightlifting platform at the Ogun 2024 National Sports Festival witnessed more than just powerful lifts—it became the stage for an emotional triumph as Caroline Albert, a native of Edo State representing Bayelsa, conquered her battles both on and off the bar to win three gold medals.

In an exclusive interview with Sports247 shortly after her victory, Caroline shared her journey—one defined not only by physical strain but mental resilience.

“Before I got to this level, the training, the injuries, the hard work—it was not easy at all,” she said while relaxing after her competition.

“It came with a lot of discouragement. At times, I felt like I should stop. But something inside me kept pushing.”

That “something” was belief—belief that winners are not quitters. “If you want to win, you have to sacrifice a lot,” Caroline said.

“To the glory of God, today I am smiling. I’m smiling at last.”

Representing Team Bayelsa, Caroline swept all three gold medals in the Women’s +87kg category—snatch, clean & jerk, and total—proving her grit and growth in the sport she admitted not taking seriously at the start. “I started weightlifting a few years back, and I didn’t take it too seriously at first,” she confessed.

“But as I found myself in more competitions, I started falling in love with the game. And today, I’m more than happy I stayed.”

Beyond the medals, Caroline spoke warmly of her experience in Ogun State.

“The people here are lovely and kind. The hospitality is 100 percent. The environment is calm—it helped me stay focused.”

Though she hails from Edo, her loyalty to Bayelsa is strong. “I’m from Edo State, but basically I’m here representing Bayelsa. And I’m proud to bring them this victory.”

Caroline’s story isn’t just about strength measured in kilograms—it’s about the power of perseverance, faith, and finding joy in purpose.

As the festival continues, her journey stands as a glowing reminder that behind every medal is a human story worth hearing.
