Ogun2025: Delta’s Chinonye Okonkwo Triumphs in Judo with Golden Comeback

Chinonye Okonkwo delivered a stunning performance in the women’s judo competition at the 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, claiming the gold medal for Delta State.

Speaking to Sports247 after her victory, Okonkwo reflected on her journey from bronze medallist at the last Festival in Delta State to champion this year.

“I won bronze last time despite being very sick in camp. This year I’m very, very grateful to my coach—without him, I don’t know where I’d be today.”

Okonkwo faced tough opponents in every round, describing each match as a fierce battle.

“The fights were very tough. All my opponents were strong, but with God’s help, I still won.”

While she praised the overall organisation of the Festival, she admitted the catering left much to be desired.

“They tried, but the food doesn’t make sense—everybody had a running stomach.”

Looking ahead, Okonkwo has set her sights on the All-Africa Judo Championships.

“When I return to Delta, I’ll train even harder so I can win gold at the All-Africa Championships. After here, it’s more training to do better.”

Despite occasional confusion—some people have mistaken her for a shot-putter—Okonkwo is proud to represent judo and Delta State.

“I’m very proud to be part of Team Delta State. We win overall, and I’m proud of our team.”

Her golden comeback caps a memorable Festival for the Delta judoka and underscores her determination to excel on the continental stage.
