Abeokuta, Ogun State – Team Kano celebrated a historic moment at the ongoing 2025 National Sports Festival in Ogun State as weightlifter Lucky Orobasa secured the state’s first gold medal in the men’s 109kg snatch category.
Orobasa’s triumph marked a significant achievement for Kano, as the state rounded off the weightlifting event with a total of three medals: one gold, one silver, and one bronze.
Yahaya Abdullahi complemented the haul with a silver and bronze in the 109kg clean and jerk categories.
“This gold means a lot, but we’re setting our sights on even more medals in the festival “.
In the women’s category, Temidayo Jegede added to Kano’s medal count with two silvers and a bronze in the 55kg division, while Adamma Dorcas Anyimba won two bronze medals in the 49kg weight class.
Head coach of Team Kano’s weightlifting squad, Ahmed Aliyu, commended the athletes’ efforts and acknowledged the challenges they faced.
“Our goal was to sweep gold in weightlifting, but due to some injuries and minor errors, we ended up with one gold, three silvers, and four bronzes,” Aliyu said.
“Nonetheless, we are grateful to Almighty Allah for this achievement and proud of our athletes’ determination.”
Outside the weightlifting arena, Kano also found success in Taekwondo. Musa Muhammad claimed silver in the 54kg category, S. Baffa added another silver in the 63kg class, and Ibrahim Mukhtar secured a bronze medal.
With strong performances across multiple sports, Team Kano is building momentum and remains hopeful for more podium finishes before the festival concludes.
