The initiator of the Niger Delta Sports Festival and Chairman of Dumanis Icon, Sir Itiako Malik Ikpokpo, has lauded the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games 2024, as a remarkable improvement over previous editions, particularly the last one hosted by Delta State.
Speaking after observing some of the competitions at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, Kuto, Abeokuta, and other venues, Sir Ikpokpo praised the quality and organization of the games, attributing the success to the dedication and leadership of key figures in the National Sports Commission (NSC).

“I must say it the way it is—this is a huge improvement from what we have previously experienced,” he said.
“This transformation is largely due to the personalities at the helm—Chairman of the NSC, Shehu Dikko, and Director-General Bukola Olopade.
Their passion is evident. You can feel the excitement and joy across the venues. Just look at the energy at the swimming events; it’s inspiring.”
He emphasized the importance of continuous improvement with each edition of the festival, noting that the time and planning invested in the current games—whether over two years or more—are paying off.
“Every festival should be better than the last,” he stated. “If there’s no improvement, there’s no legacy. What we’re seeing here is sporty, exciting, and very well-organized.”
Sir Ikpokpo also highlighted the participation of athletes from the Niger Delta Sports Festival, which he described as a successful event recently held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
He called on other state governments to prioritize sports development, moving beyond treating it as a mere social service.
“Sports should be considered a serious sector—like Health, Works, or Education. It’s part of our value chain, part of our national life. States like Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers are setting the pace, and it’s time others followed suit,” he urged.
Expectations in Athletics
Looking ahead to the athletics segment of the festival, Ikpokpo expressed hope for new talents to emerge and records to be broken.
“I want to see new champions. I want to see younger athletes pushing boundaries and achieving greatness. That’s what athletics should be about—competition and continuous improvement.”
On Anti-Doping Efforts
Commenting on the recent bans of athletes over doping violations, the former Chairman of Isoko South Local Government Area and Deputy National President of ALGON applauded the NSC’s firm stance.
“What matters is that the NSC investigated and took the right steps. Integrity must be at the heart of sports, and their actions reflect that commitment.”
A Message to Officials and Athletes
Sir Ikpokpo, who is also eyeing the presidency of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, called for integrity and dedication among all participants.
“My message is simple: officials must be fair, and athletes must give their all—compete with heart and honor. Represent your states and make Nigeria proud.”
