OGUN 2025: Ama-Ebi Opens Up On Venue Readiness As Table Tennis Medals Hunt Begins At Gateway Games

The Chairman of the Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association, Ama-Ebi Ebikpolade Stow, has praised the quality of facilities at the ongoing Gateway Games in Ogun State, describing them as “top-notch,” in an exclusive interview with Sports247.

Speaking at the Alake Sports Centre just before the commencement of the table tennis event, Ama-Ebi commended the organizers for their commitment to international standards in both infrastructure and equipment.

“They’ve got the floor, which is very necessary for the game of table tennis. And the tables—I can see they are top-notch. The Butterfly Centerfold 25 is a standard one. So as far as equipment goes, it’s excellent,” he stated.

Ama-Ebi expressed high hopes for the Bayelsa State table tennis team, citing the athletes’ preparation and quality.

“The expectations are high. We are going to do well. My athletes are in top shape—they are among the best,” he added.

As a board member of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, Ama-Ebi also reflected on the broader development of the sport in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for more investment and stakeholder engagement.

“There’s a lot that needs to be done. We need support from the federal government and must attract private sector involvement to help grow the sport,” he said.

The Gateway Games have attracted some of the country’s finest table tennis players, including foreign-based talents like Olajide Omotayo, Azeez Solanke, and Taiwo Matti, who are all representing Bayelsa State. Their presence brings a layer of international experience and competitiveness to the event.

Lagos State enters the competition with national champion Matthew Kuti and rising star Muiz Adegoke, while strong contingents from Kwara, Ondo, Oyo, and Delta States promise a thrilling contest.

Other top home-based names include Abdulbasit Abdulfatai—fresh from a tournament win in Osun—and seasoned campaigners like Akinwale Fagbamila and Joshua Olaniran.

In the para-table tennis category, all eyes are on Paris Paralympics bronze medalist Isau Ogunkunle, representing Ogun State in the Men’s Class 4 singles. Commonwealth Games medalist Faith Obazuaye leads Edo State’s campaign in the women’s para event.

Addressing the debate over elite players overshadowing emerging talents, Ama-Ebi emphasized the importance of inclusivity.

“If there’s a rule that says elite players shouldn’t be involved, fine. But there are no such rules. As long as you’re a Nigerian, you have the right to compete. Sports is all about ability and seizing the platform to shine,” he concluded.

The table tennis event at the Gateway Games runs from May 24 to 28 at the Alake Sports Centre and promises a blend of high-octane matches, emerging talent, and fierce battles across singles, doubles, and para categories
