Odion Ighalo Stars As Al Hilal Claims Lusail Super Cup Over Zamalek

Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has lifted another piece of silverware with Al Hilal after the Saudi club defeated Egypt’s Zamalek on penalty kicks to lift the Lusail Super Cup on Friday night.

The match ended 1-1 in normal time in front of over 77,000 fans at Qatar’s Lusail Stadium. The encounter between the Saudi Pro League champions and the Egyptian Premier League champions was the first to be played at the stadium, which will host the 2022 World Cup final.

Ighalo scored the game’s first goal in the 18th minute by chipping the goalkeeper after receiving a beautiful lofted pass. Ahmed Sayed equalised for Zamalek later in the first half. The winger scored from a rebound in the 33rd minute and both teams went to the halftime break level.

Al Hilal had the majority of possession during the game, but was unable to convert their chances in the second half. The game went to a penalty shoot-out.

Ighalo scored the first penalty of the shootout for Al-Hilal, who went on to win 4-1 and claim the Lusail Super Cup.

Ighalo has now won two trophies with Al Hilal, having won the Saudi Pro League with the club last season. He finished the season as the league’s leading scorer, with 24 goals. This season the 31-year-old has two goals in three league matches.
