Nigeria celebrated another landmark achievement in continental para sports governance as two of its representatives secured strategic leadership positions on the Board of the Africa Paralympic Committee (AfPC) during the General Assembly held in Accra, Ghana, on Sunday, November 9, 2025.
Mr. Sunday Odebode, a respected figure in African para sports administration, was overwhelmingly re-elected as President of the West Africa region — a position he has held with distinction. In the same election, Mr. Suleiman Isah was elected as Treasurer of the AfPC, further strengthening Nigeria’s presence within the continent’s highest Paralympic decision-making body.

The election drew delegates from across Africa and marked another milestone in Nigeria’s 38-year history of occupying influential positions on the AfPC Board.
Speaking after his re-election, Odebode expressed deep appreciation to member nations of the West African sub-region for their unwavering confidence in his leadership. He described the mandate as both “an honour and a responsibility” to continue advancing para sports across Africa.
“I want to sincerely thank member countries for their continued trust. This mandate is not just for me but for the entire region. We will continue to promote inclusivity, expand opportunities and ensure that para athletes in West Africa and across the continent have the platforms they deserve to excel,” Odebode said.
He emphasized that his administration will intensify collaboration, capacity building and structured development programmes aimed at empowering para athletes and strengthening national federations.
In his own remarks, Mr. Suleiman Isah expressed gratitude to the Assembly and pledged strict transparency, accountability and prudent financial management in his new role as Treasurer.
The Africa Paralympic Committee, working alongside the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), remains the umbrella body responsible for driving participation, development and governance of para sports across the continent.
The election of Odebode and Isah has been widely welcomed as a powerful endorsement of Nigeria’s long-standing commitment, consistency and impact in the advancement of para sports in Africa. Their leadership is expected to further elevate the region and reinforce Nigeria’s reputation as a key driving force in Paralympic growth and advocacy
