Former Flying Eagles coach John Sam Obuh has urged Nigerians not to panic over the country’s U20 World Cup lapses, insisting that the team remains on the right path toward future success.
Speaking in the wake of Morocco’s historic triumph at the tournament, Obuh said the North African nation’s victory should be viewed as a source of inspiration rather than disappointment for Nigeria.

“What Morocco’s win tells us is that Africa can produce world champions — and Nigeria is not far behind,” Obuh told reporters. “We only need to build on our recent outing in Chile and correct our minor lapses.”
The experienced tactician, who led Nigeria to several youth tournaments in the past, emphasized that the country must consolidate on its current progress rather than overreact to setbacks.
He noted that while the Flying Eagles showed flashes of brilliance, poor finishing and moments of lost concentration proved costly.
“There’s no need for alarm,” Obuh added. “We should see this as part of the learning curve. If we stay consistent in our developmental structure, we can go one better next time.”
Obuh’s comments come as the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) continues to review its youth football framework, with plans to strengthen scouting and grassroots programs ahead of the next U20 cycle.
He concluded with a message of optimism, stressing that the Flying Eagles remain one of Africa’s most talented youth sides.
“Morocco’s victory should challenge us, not discourage us. We can — and will — win it someday.”
