Oboabona Warns Eagles: ‘Ignore the NFF Drama — You Play for Nigeria, Not the Politics’

Former Super Eagles defender Godfrey Oboabona has urged the national team to block out the ongoing administrative distractions surrounding the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and remain fully focused on the task ahead, delivering a strong performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, which begins on 21 December 2025.

Oboabona, a member of the 2013 AFCON-winning squad, said players must remember that wearing the national colours is an honour that goes beyond federation issues.

“Playing for Nigeria is bigger than any drama around the NFF. You are representing your family, your supporters, and your country, not the politics,” he said.

The former defender highlighted the importance of unity and concentration, especially with the tournament just days away. He insisted that success at AFCON depends largely on mental clarity and collective purpose.

“The players must shut out the noise and stay focused on their jobs. When the team performs well, it lifts everyone, including the federation. But when results go wrong, it affects the whole system,” he noted.

Oboabona urged the squad to adopt a tunnel-vision mentality, stressing that internal distractions must never seep into camp or influence performance.

“Focus and unity will be key. This is the time for the boys to stand together and show character,” he said.

He also reminded the players that Nigerians are desperate for a moment of pride after the disappointment of missing the 2026 World Cup.

“The country is depending on them. Nigerians want something to celebrate again. The players must remember who they are playing for,” he added.

Oboabona expressed confidence that if the team remains disciplined and mentally committed, Nigeria can enjoy a strong run in Morocco.

“This squad has quality. With the right mindset, they can go far. But they must cut out distractions and focus on representing Nigeria with honour,” he concluded.

As the countdown to AFCON continues, his message is clear: lock in, stay united, and let football, not politics, speak.
