Oboabona Urges Eagles: ‘Forget the World Cup, Winning AFCON 2025 Will Restore Nigeria’s Pride’

Former Super Eagles defender Godfrey Oboabona has called on the national team to put the heartbreak of missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup firmly behind them and redirect all their energy toward a successful campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco (21 Dec 2025 – 18 Jan 2026).

Oboabona, a key part of Nigeria’s 2013 AFCON-winning squad, said the disappointment felt across the country is valid but stressed that dwelling on failure will only distract the team from the huge task ahead.

“We must move on from the World Cup disappointment. The focus now has to be AFCON in Morocco,” he said.

The former Rizespor and Al-Ahli defender believes the Super Eagles have the quality to win the tournament and that lifting the title would significantly rebuild national pride and restore confidence in the team.

“Winning AFCON will go a long way in restoring pride, or the players, for the fans, and for Nigerian football as a whole,” he added.

Oboabona noted that the team must show character and unity, qualities that often define champions at major tournaments.

He said the AFCON presents the perfect opportunity for the squad to reset and build momentum ahead of future international competitions.

“AFCON is a fresh start. Winning it can create the momentum we need moving forward,” he explained.

He urged the players to approach the tournament with seriousness, hunger, and the mentality of a team eager to write a new chapter after recent setbacks.

“The boys must stay focused and give everything. This is a chance to redeem themselves,” he said.

Oboabona also appealed to fans to remain supportive and optimistic, saying the national team thrives on unity and positivity from the Nigerian public.

“Nigerians should keep believing. With the right attitude and support, the Super Eagles can achieve something big in Morocco,” he concluded.
