Former Super Eagles defender Godfrey Oboabona has backed Nigeria to overcome their upcoming World Cup playoff test, insisting that the team’s quality and mentality give them an edge over any opponent on the continent.
Speaking after the conclusion of the group stage, Oboabona admitted that the playoffs will present a fresh challenge but expressed confidence that the Super Eagles have the right mix of experience, talent, and resilience to advance.

He singled out striker Victor Osimhen for special praise, describing him as the emotional and tactical leader of the squad. “Osimhen’s energy, passion, and hunger to win are contagious,” Oboabona said.
“He plays every game like it’s his last, and that spirit drives the entire team. If every player can match that intensity, Nigeria will be unstoppable.”
The former defender, who was part of Nigeria’s 2013 AFCON-winning team, urged the players to stay united and focused, warning that the playoff stage will test both their physical and mental strength. He emphasized that discipline and teamwork will be just as vital as individual brilliance.
Odoabona added that Nigeria’s recent resurgence has reignited belief among fans and restored optimism in the team’s World Cup qualification campaign. “We’ve seen what this team can do when they play with confidence and purpose,” he said. “Now it’s time to finish the job.”
