Former Super Eagles defender Godfrey Oboabona has expressed strong belief that Nigeria will complete their World Cup qualification mission after their emphatic 4–0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo.
Speaking in reaction to the result, Oboabona lauded the players for their impressive display and resilience throughout the qualifiers, noting that the victory was not just about scoring goals, but about restoring belief and national pride.

“It was a massive performance — not just in scoreline, but in attitude. The boys showed hunger, commitment, and unity. That’s the spirit we’ve all been asking for,” Oboabona said.
The former Rizespor of Turkey defender praised head coach Eric Chelle for steadying the team after a difficult campaign and instilling renewed confidence in the players.
“Coach Chelle deserves credit. He came in at a tough time and has managed to get the team believing again. You can see the difference in their body language and confidence,” he added.
Oboabona, who was part of Nigeria’s 2013 AFCON-winning squad, also singled out Victor Osimhen for his leadership and work ethic after scoring a stunning hat-trick to inspire the win.
“Osimhen has become the heartbeat of the team. His determination lifts everyone around him. You can tell he wants to make history with Nigeria,” he said.
The former defender urged Nigerians to continue supporting the team ahead of the playoff round, emphasizing that qualification remains within reach if unity is maintained.
“We’re not there yet, but we’re close. The players have made us proud, and if they keep this momentum, we’ll be celebrating World Cup qualification soon,” Oboabona concluded.
