Former Super Eagles defender, Abiodun Obafemi, has cautioned Nigeria’s national team to take nothing for granted ahead of their crucial World Cup playoff clash against Gabon, warning that the Panthers are a fast, organized, and dangerous side.
Speaking in an interview, Obafemi said the Super Eagles must learn from past mistakes and approach the match with total focus and tactical discipline.

He described Gabon as a side that combines speed, physicality, and teamwork, comparing their mobility to that of South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.
“Gabon is not a small team,” Obafemi warned. “They play quick, modern football, and they are fearless. Anything less than 100 percent focus could be costly.”
The former Olympic gold medalist stressed that Nigeria cannot afford to underestimate any opponent at this stage of the qualifiers. He urged the players to maintain the same intensity they displayed in their recent 4–0 win and to play as a cohesive unit rather than relying on individual brilliance.
“The playoffs are not for experiments. It’s now about mentality, discipline, and teamwork,” he added. “If the players give their all, Nigeria will qualify — but it won’t come easy.”
Obafemi concluded by expressing optimism that the Super Eagles have enough quality to overcome Gabon, provided they remain humble, focused, and clinical in both legs.
