Former Super Eagles defender Abiodun Obafemi has called on the Nigerian national team to remain fully focused on their World Cup qualification playoff against Gabon, urging the players to ignore the mounting controversies surrounding Nigerian football in recent days.
With reports of unrest in camp over unpaid bonuses and administrative disputes between the NFF and players’ representatives, Obafemi believes the timing of such distractions could not be worse. However, he remains confident that the team possesses enough experience and professionalism to deliver when it matters most.

“This is not the time for off-field noise,” Obafemi said. “The players must block out the distractions, because all that matters now is winning the playoff and booking our ticket to the World Cup. Everything else can wait.”
The 1996 Olympic gold medallist reminded the squad that representing Nigeria comes with immense responsibility, especially when millions of fans are counting on them to qualify after what has been a turbulent campaign.>
“These kinds of issues have always been part of our football, even in our time,” Obafemi noted. “But the difference is how you handle it. The best response is to perform on the pitch. Once you win, every other thing becomes easier to resolve.”
Obafemi also praised the leadership of coach Eric Chelle, saying the Franco-Malian tactician has brought calm and tactical clarity since taking charge. He urged the players to rally behind him and play with unity, determination, and pride.
“Chelle has shown discipline and composure. Now the players must show the same,” he said. “Against Gabon, it’s not just about talent — it’s about heart, focus, and mentality.”
The former defender concluded by expressing confidence that Nigeria will overcome Gabon if they stay organized and approach the match with the seriousness it deserves, warning that any lapse in concentration could prove costly.
