Former Nigeria international Abiodun Obafemi has called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to act swiftly by extending the contract of Super Eagles head coach Eric Sekou Chelle, warning that delays could prove costly.
Obafemi said Chelle’s impressive work with the Super Eagles has naturally attracted interest from clubs, including reported attention from European sides such as Olympique Marseille, and stressed that Nigeria must prioritize stability.
“The coach is doing well, and that’s why there is interest in him,” Obafemi said. “The NFF should not wait until the last minute. They need to secure him now.”
According to the former striker, continuity is crucial if the Super Eagles are to build on recent progress, especially after strong performances at major tournaments.
“What this team needs now is stability,” he added. “If you believe in the project, then you must protect it. Extending Chelle’s contract will send a clear message of confidence to both the players and the coach.”
Obafemi also suggested that the federation should not hesitate to improve Chelle’s terms if necessary, noting that successful coaches are always in demand.
“If it means reviewing his salary or conditions, then so be it,” he said. “The Super Eagles cannot afford unnecessary disruption at this stage.”
He concluded by urging the football authorities to act decisively, insisting that keeping Chelle would give Nigeria the best chance to consolidate gains and aim higher in upcoming competitions.
