Obafemi Issues Final Warning: Super Eagles Can’t Afford Any More Slip-Ups

Former Super Eagles defender, Abiodun Obafemi, has described FIFA’s three-point deduction against South Africa as a “lifeline” for Nigeria but cautioned that it will count for nothing unless the team seizes the moment.

The sanction, which has blown Group C wide open, has given Nigeria an unexpected chance to return to contention for a 2026 FIFA World Cup ticket. But Obafemi insists the Eagles are still walking on a razor’s edge.

“This ruling gives us another chance, but it is not in our hands entirely,” he said. “Nigeria must win their remaining two matches — there is no alternative. Anything less, and we are out.”

Obafemi further stressed that South Africa and Benin remain dangerous contenders. “South Africa will be even more determined to prove their strength despite losing points, while Benin are in the mix. We can’t sit back and expect miracles — we must fight.”

The former defender also delivered a stern message to the players, reminding them of the significance of this campaign. “Some of these players may not get another opportunity to play at a World Cup. They should treat these games like their careers depend on it — because they do.”

He urged fans to rally behind the team but maintained that qualification will only come through hard work and discipline. “Support from Nigerians is crucial, but the players must give us something to cheer about. Two wins are non-negotiable.”

For the Super Eagles, the math is simple: take six points and pray rivals stumble. For Obafemi, however, the deeper issue is urgency. “This is the last chance saloon. If we blow it, history will not be kind.”
