Lagos-based Green Lock FC have officially announced their withdrawal from the N-Youth League following careful consideration by the club’s management, opting instead to focus on the NLO Cup Tournament as they prioritise regulatory compliance, players’ welfare, and long-term development.
Sports247 reports that Green Lock FC confirmed their decision to withdraw from the N-Youth League just hours before their scheduled kick-off, explaining that the move was made in the best interest of the club and its players. The club cited concerns surrounding regulatory compliance, player eligibility, welfare, and the long-term development of players’ football careers in line with the applicable frameworks of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
According to the official statement, the decision was difficult but necessary as the club sought a more suitable competition to support its immediate objectives and long-term ambitions.
Green Lock FC further disclosed that they would now concentrate on participating in the NLO Cup Tournament, which offers the team an opportunity to play their home matches at the Maracana Stadium in Lagos rather than travelling to Sagamu.
The club explained that playing at their home ground would provide greater convenience for both the team and its supporters while reducing the challenges associated with travelling for matches.
Another key factor behind the decision is the player registration process.
According to the statement, the NLO Cup offers a more straightforward procedure for registering new players in Lagos compared with Abuja, allowing the club to strengthen its squad and maintain its focus on player development and competitive performance.
Despite their withdrawal, Green Lock FC expressed appreciation to the organisers of the N-Youth League for their efforts in providing competitive opportunities for young football talents.
“We sincerely appreciate the N-Youth League organisers for their efforts in providing competitive opportunities for young football talents,” the club stated.
The management also extended its gratitude to the players, technical crew, supporters, and partners for their understanding and continued support following the announcement.
Green Lock FC’s decision represents a strategic shift in their competition plans, with the club now looking to use the NLO Cup Tournament to strengthen its squad, develop young players, and improve its competitive readiness.
