The Technical Director of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Uthman Ola Okunnu, has assured that Team Lagos’ dominant showing at the 9th National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, Delta State, will be sustained beyond this year’s competition.
Speaking at the venue in Asaba, Okunnu described the team’s performance as “just a tip of the iceberg,” noting that the state had already surpassed its achievements from the previous edition.
“So far, it has been great. When compared with the last edition, we have surpassed last year’s result, and we are still going. The sky is the limit,” he said.
Team Lagos currently tops the medals table with 47 gold, 28 silver, and 22 bronze medals going into the final day of the Games. Edo State follows with 33 gold, while hosts Delta are third with 31 gold medals.
Okunnu attributed the team’s success to meticulous preparations by the LSSC and the strong backing of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
He highlighted the governor’s investment in sporting infrastructure, particularly the construction of an Olympic-size swimming pool, which powered Lagos’ aquatics team to an impressive 19 gold medals.
“It’s as a result of flawless preparations and teamwork. Everyone at the LSSC worked together to maximize the facilities provided by His Excellency,” he said.
The Technical Director also pledged that the state will continue to nurture its young athletes.
“We will not neglect the athletes who made Lagos proud. We will groom them into champions who will bring glory to Nigeria, the Giant of Africa,” he added.
The Youth Games conclude today with finals in wrestling, judo, and athletics, including the 4×100 metres relay and the mixed 4×400 metres relay, before the closing ceremony in Asaba.
