The Ogun State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, has emphasized that the State’s major priority at the 9th National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba is talent discovery rather than chasing medals.
Speaking on Friday as the Games conclude in the Delta State capital, Isiaka explained that the competition provides an opportunity to groom future stars who will represent Ogun and Nigeria at higher levels.

“At this very young age grade, winning medals is not our top priority. What matters most is the number of athletes we are able to channel into the national teams. That is our real achievement,” the Commissioner stated.
Isiaka expressed delight with Team Ogun’s performance, revealing that four athletes from the state’s contingent were identified by the National Sports Commission (NSC) and selected for a special training camp.
He assured that the government will nurture them to fulfill their potential.
The Commissioner stressed that sports development has been central to his administration, with initiatives designed to transform Ogun into the home of grassroots sports.
As part of these efforts, he announced a new partnership with primary and secondary schools across the state to scout and groom talented athletes.
“There is always room for improvement. That is why we are involving NAPGAS, which oversees primary school pupils.
Those discovered at the early stage will be developed further to compete at national and international levels, including the Under-17 Games,” he explained.
Isiaka praised Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his unwavering support, noting that recent achievements would not have been possible without his investment in sports.
As at Friday evening Team Ogun has a total of 31 medals comprising of 4 gold, 9 silver and 18 bronze medal to occupy number 12 on the Medal Table
