NWFL20/21: Monday Gift Shines As Robo Cruise To Derby Win

The first southwestern derby of the Nigeria Women football league ended in an intriguing one as FC Robo found they wanted revenge against Osun Babes in week 2 of the new NWFL season.

In an encounter that saw the host dominate almost all through the duration, saw 4 goals scored with the host getting three of those to seal their second win of the season. Both teams had gone into the game unbeaten but the young ladies from Lagos looked determined to keep their 100% record.

Monday Gift will be the man of the match as she crowned the efforts of the Lagos Landladies in the first 45 with a late goal scored in the 43rd minute after Omoluabi queens failed to clear their lines from a corner. Although Captain Sarah Iloduba was rock solid in the heart of defense till the latter stages of the first half.

The second 45 started in favor of the home side as they swiftly tried to get a second goal which came after Christy Obia fumbled a corner kick that saw Monday Gift tap into an empty net for her second and her team’s second.

With FC Robo cruising and Monday Gift on a hat trick, Osun Babes needed a response to get something respectable from the game. While Abibat Agbaji was a constant threat in the second half for the Queens, Monday Gift kept scoring the goals for the host.

Gift’s third came via a gift from Olamide Bolaji who lost the ball in the middle of the park. Gift was well placed and slotted the ball past Obia to bag a hat trick on the night.

Osun Babes’ coach responded with the introduction of Kesiana Ojiyovwi and Abiodun Oluwakemi to give her side some bite on the attack. Both players combined well with the ever-threatening Agbaji as the trio started to give Kehinde Akinwande and other FC Robo defenders problems.

With 10 minutes left on the clock, the trio of Kesiana, Biodun, and Agbaji combined well to find a consolation goal for the Queens scored by Abibat Agbaji after she was played through on goal. Minutes later, Kesiana was fouled in the box in what looks like a clear-cut penalty but the referee waved it off.

The laterally from Osun Babes to score more goals exposed them at the back but the FC Robo attackers could not take their chances as Obia stood strong.

The win takes FC Robo to second on the NWFL table with 2 wins out of 2 and with a goal difference of 3 while Osun Babes sit eighth with three points from two games and a goal difference of minus 1.

Osun Babes play their first home game of the season next week against Pelican Stars while FC Robo are on the road to face Bayelsa Queens.
