NWFL: Uwah Brace Downs Edo Queens in Port Harcourt as Aduku Blames Defensive Error For Derby Defeat

Abasiofon Uwah struck twice to hand Rivers Angels a 2–1 victory over Edo Queens in Port Harcourt, as Edo Queens head coach Moses Aduku blamed costly defensive lapses for his side’s defeat in Matchday 9 of the Nigeria Women Football League Premiership.

Speaking after the game, Aduku described the contest as evenly balanced but admitted that his team failed to make the most of their chances, unlike the home side.

“It was a good game played at a high level. Both teams competed well, but the team that scored the two goals won,” Aduku said.

The Edo Queens coach praised his players for their fighting spirit, especially their late push in search of an equaliser.

“I give kudos to my players. They kept pushing until the very end, but the equaliser just didn’t come. That’s football.”

Aduku, however, pointed to a key defensive error that proved decisive.

“My defenders were caught napping. For me, I thought the goal was offside, but if my defenders had stood well, they could have dealt with it. One mistake and you concede.”

He also spoke positively about striker Atume Dosuur, while stressing the need for greater efficiency in front of goal.

“She is doing well and always takes her chances, but she can still do better. She could have scored more. Six goals in eight games in her first season is good, but she needs to push herself more.”

On the overall state of the league, Aduku acknowledged improvement but noted that the frequent movement of players abroad continues to affect quality.

“The league is improving, but the japa syndrome is reducing quality. Still, coaches are working hard and replacements are coming in, so the standard is rising.”

Uwah opened the scoring for Rivers Angels from the penalty spot in the 14th minute before Atume Dosuur drew Edo Queens level in the 26th minute.

Just before halftime, Uwah completed her brace in the 45th minute to secure all three points for the hosts.

With the result, Edo Queens remain third on Group A standings with 18 points as the 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership season reaches its halfway point.
