In a strategic move to elevate the standard of weightlifting in Nigeria and foster greater continuity in the sport, the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) is set to organize a high-impact, seven-day training programme for top-tier athletes and coaches in the country.
The intensive training camp, scheduled to run from Monday, June 23 to Saturday, June 29, 2025, will take place at the state-of-the-art Weightlifting Gym, Gymnasium Hall, Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

Participants are expected to arrive on Sunday, June 22, with departure slated for Monday, June 30.
According to a press release signed by the NWF Media Officer, Mr. Amaechi Agbo, the programme will feature 22 elite athletes—comprising 10 male and 12 female lifters—alongside eight highly regarded local coaches selected by the federation.
In a major boost to the quality of the training, a renowned weightlifting coaching expert from Australia will lead the sessions.
The expert is expected to deliver cutting-edge techniques, tactical drills, and performance-boosting methodologies tailored to enhance the athletes’ competitiveness on the international stage.
Mr. Agbo emphasized that the training programme is part of the federation’s preparation blueprint for the upcoming Commonwealth Games and the next Olympic Games.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to global standards and long-term athlete development. We are not just preparing for one competition—we are building champions for the future,” he stated.
The NWF’s decision to bring in international expertise underscores its vision of aligning with world-class best practices and raising the bar in Nigeria’s weightlifting ecosystem. Athletes and coaches alike are expected to benefit immensely from the knowledge transfer, gaining valuable insights that will improve performance, technique, and strategy.
With the Commonwealth and Olympic Games on the horizon, this training programme could prove to be a game-changer in Nigeria’s quest for podium finishes and global recognition in the sport of weightlifting.
