The president of Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) and Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi has tasked the country’s wrestlers to imbibe the values of effort, energy, discipline and commitment during their continental assignment.
Sports247 reports that CGC Adeniyi stressed that the wrestlers will also have to be at their very best in order to return home with medals in all their categories from the upcoming African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt.
He added that being chosen to represent Nigeria at the championship is a privilege and call to responsibility in carrying the country’s flag high, but assured the wrestlers that the NWF will do everything needed to make them comfortable.
The customs supremo went on to reveal various efforts that have already been undertaken by the wrestling declaration to ensure a successful outing for the contingent in Egypt, even as he emphasized that they are not going for a picnic.
“Stepping onto the mat and leaving with a medal. It takes effort, energy, discipline and commitment. I believe your coaches have tried to instill these values in you. Make a personal commitment that you are returning on that aircraft with medals.
“You are no longer representing Bayelsa, Ondo, Lagos or any other state. You are now ambassadors of the green-white-green. That is something we treasure deeply. I want that thought to motivate you from the moment you step on Egyptian soil.
“I congratulate you all for earning this opportunity. Many other athletes would love to be in your position. Representing the national flag at a continental championship is a great responsibility and obligation placed on your shoulders.
“We leave the responsibility of performing well in your hands, while the federation will take care of your welfare and motivation. We will not let you down,” said Adeniyi, who also revealed the extra effort he took to get funds for their trip to Egypt.
