The Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) has disqualified more than 500 athletes during the ongoing accreditation exercise ahead of the 27th NUGA Games tagged UNIJOS 2025.
Professor Musa Yakasai, Chairman of the NUGA Technical Committee and representative of the National President, confirmed the development during an inspection of facilities in Jos.
He said the accreditation, which runs for seven days, involves verifying athletes from all registered universities to ensure strict compliance with eligibility standards.
“Each day we accredit universities from three zones, with at least 10 institutions per zone.
The process has been very intensive, running from 7 a.m. to midnight,” Prof. Yakasai stated.
He explained that the checks include verifying matriculation numbers, tuition payment records, course registration, and valid admission details.
He noted that Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, and Federal University Lokoja recorded zero disqualifications.
While several other universities had high numbers, with some losing as many as 70 athletes out of 300 entries.
Common issues leading to disqualification include inactive university portals, fake or mismatched photos, use of ineligible non-students or graduates, and outdated academic records dating as far back as 2016.
Prof. Yakasai emphasized that these strict measures aim to reduce post-game protests.
“At UNILAG 2022, only five appeals were recorded. This year, we are targeting zero protests,” he said.
On facility readiness, he noted that the indoor sports hall is nearing roofing, while the Tartan track only requires final layering.
However, swimming events may be relocated off-campus due to construction delays.
He stressed that contingency “City Games” venues are available to ensure the schedule remains unaffected.
Mrs. Eunice Adebayo James, Chairperson of the NUGA Accreditation Team and Director of Sports at Benson Idahosa University, commended UNIJOS for providing seamless accreditation facilities.
Prof. Yakasai reaffirmed the commitment of the organizers:
“We are determined to host a transparent and fair Games, ensuring every athlete meets the eligibility criteria.”
UNIJOS is on track to deliver the best NUGA Games yet.” he concluded.
The games is scheduled to kick off on November 5, 2025, at the University of Jos (UNIJOS).
