NSC Recognises AFFAN for Inclusion in National Sports Federations’ Boards

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has officially recognised the Association of Former Female Athletes of Nigeria (AFFAN) as a stakeholder in the governance of National Sports Federations (NSF).

This move, according to the Commission, aligns with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) agenda of promoting women’s participation in sports governance and reflects Nigeria’s commitment to global best practices on gender inclusivity.

NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, have been vocal advocates of inclusiveness in sports leadership.

The Commission currently boasts three female directors heading key departments, Mrs. Mbora (Federations and Elite Athletes), Mrs. Amaka Ashiofu (Grassroots), and Mrs. Thecla Opara (Festivals & Para Sports). Their contributions, the NSC noted, underscore the positive impact of women in sports administration.

By granting AFFAN representation on NSF boards, the Commission aims to provide opportunities for Nigeria’s former female athletes to contribute their wealth of experience to governance and policy development. These athletes, once celebrated for flying the nation’s flag in international competitions, will now play a crucial role in mentoring young talents and shaping the future of Nigerian sports.

“The inclusion of AFFAN goes beyond administrative reform. It is a recognition that those who brought Nigeria medals and glory must also be entrusted with guiding the structures that will produce tomorrow’s champions,” the statement read.

The NSC emphasised that the representation of former female athletes will not only strengthen governance but also inspire the next generation while sustaining the legacy of excellence that has brought honour to the country.

With this approval, AFFAN will have representatives on the boards of national sports federations during the forthcoming elections.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and sustainable growth in Nigerian sports.
