Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Alhaji Shehu Dikko, has announced plans to establish a modern motorsport venue in Abuja, following the recent continental success of Nigerian drifter Jamus Bashar Muhammad, who emerged champion at the East African Drift Championship in Kenya.
Speaking in Abuja, Dikko described Jamus’s feat as “trailblazing” and a strong signal that Nigeria must broaden its sporting priorities beyond traditional disciplines such as football and basketball.

He revealed that the NSC is already working with relevant partners to identify a suitable location in the capital city to serve as the country’s first dedicated motorsport hub.
“Jamus has shown that talent exists in every corner of Nigeria,” Dikko stated. “We cannot continue to limit our youth to football or basketball. Motorsport is growing fast across the continent, and Nigeria must not be left behind.”
He noted that the initiative aims to create an enabling environment for local and international competitions, nurture new talents, and attract investment into Nigeria’s sports sector.
“This project is not just about racing,” he added. “It’s about youth empowerment, tourism, and national pride. Once the infrastructure is ready, we can host events that will draw attention from across Africa.”
The NSC boss further revealed that discussions are ongoing with both public and private stakeholders to ensure the project’s sustainability, adding that motorsport academies and safety training centres would also be incorporated into the plan.
“We are looking at a complete ecosystem — from karting to professional drifting,” Dikko explained. “The goal is to make Nigeria a hub for motorsport talent in West Africa.”
Dikko concluded by congratulating Jamus Bashar once more, urging young Nigerians to take inspiration from his achievement and explore diverse sporting avenues.
