NSC Boss Debunks Favour Ofili Nationality Switch Rumours, Confirms Her Loyalty To Nigeria

Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has firmly dismissed rumours surrounding elite sprinter Favour Ofili’s alleged switch of nationality to Turkey.

Speaking during a press conference at the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U18 and U20 Championships in Abuja, Olopade reassured Nigerians that the 21-year-old speedster remains committed to representing Nigeria.

“There is no official confirmation of any nationality change by Favour Ofili,” Olopade stated. “She remains a Nigerian athlete and is actively involved in national programs.”

His comments follow widespread online speculation suggesting that the Louisiana State University (LSU) star had completed a switch to Turkey—a move that has now been categorically denied.

Olopade emphasized that Ofili is one of 69 elite athletes who received financial grants from the NSC in April 2025, a clear indicator of her involvement in Nigeria’s sports development plans. He also revealed that Ofili has consistently shown patriotism and has communicated directly with the commission, affirming her allegiance to Nigeria.

“Favour Ofili has not made any request for a change of nationality to any other country, including Turkey. We remain in constant contact with her and her management team,” he added.

Ofili is one of Nigeria’s most promising athletes, known for her blistering speed and record-breaking performances. She currently holds multiple national and African records in sprint events and is widely regarded as a medal contender at future global championships, including the Paris 2025 World Championships and the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The NSC’s statement is expected to put an end to ongoing speculation and restore confidence in Nigeria’s athletics team. As the CAA Championships continue in Abuja, the focus now shifts back to performance and preparation for upcoming international competitions.
