NPFL Sanctions Kwara United Over Security Breach, Crowd Violence in Ilorin

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has charged Kwara United for multiple breaches of the league’s Framework and Rules following crowd disturbances during their Matchday 22 rearranged fixture against Rivers United.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at the Kwara State Stadium, where the home club was found to have failed in providing adequate and effective security.

According to the NPFL, this lapse allowed unauthorised persons to gain access to restricted areas of the stadium.

The league further stated that Kwara United did not ensure proper conduct of their supporters, resulting in harassment and injuries to match officials and officials of Rivers United. Supporters reportedly invaded restricted zones, assaulted officials, and caused bodily harm—actions deemed capable of bringing the game into disrepute.

As a result, the NPFL imposed a series of sanctions on the Ilorin-based club. Kwara United were fined ₦2 million for failing to provide adequate security and an additional ₦1 million for failing to control their supporters, bringing that subtotal to ₦3 million.

The club will also pay ₦2 million for the assault on match officials and Rivers United officials, alongside another ₦1 million for unsporting behaviour.

In addition, Kwara United were fined ₦1 million for holding match officials and Rivers United officials hostage for several hours after the match, and ₦2 million as compensatory costs for medical treatment and damages suffered by the affected officials.

On the sporting side, the NPFL ordered the deduction of three points and three goals from Kwara United’s accumulated tally for the assaults on match officials.

The club has also been directed to play their remaining home matches at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena.

Furthermore, Kwara United must identify the supporters involved in the assaults for arrest and prosecution and provide evidence of compliance to the league.

Kwara United have been given 48 hours from the date of notice to appeal the sanctions.
