The 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season kicked off in thrilling fashion on Friday evening, as Remo Stars battled Rivers United to a 1-1 draw in a high-tempo curtain-raiser at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Kuto, Abeokuta.
Rivers United wasted no time in stamping their presence on the game, taking the lead just three minutes after kick-off.

Forward Aniekeme Okon pounced from close range to fire the visitors ahead, recording the first goal of the new NPFL campaign.
The early strike stunned the home fans and momentarily silenced the lively atmosphere in Abeokuta.
However, Remo Stars responded almost immediately.
In the 9th minute, prolific striker Victor Mbaoma showed his trademark composure, slotting home a neat finish to restore parity and ignite the stadium once again.
Unfortunately for the home side, Mbaoma picked up a knock later in the half and was substituted for Adama Goita, forcing Remo Stars coach into an early tactical reshuffle.
The second half proved a more cagey affair as both teams tightened their defensive lines while still searching for a winner.
Rivers United looked dangerous on the counter with their pacey wingers, while Remo Stars pushed forward in spells, buoyed by their home support.
Despite the pressure at both ends, neither side could find the decisive breakthrough.
The game, however, ended in dramatic fashion. Deep into stoppage time, Rivers United defender Temple Emekayi was shown a straight red card for a rash challenge, becoming the first player to be sent off in the 2025/26 season.
His dismissal meant the visitors had to see out the final seconds of the encounter with 10 men.
At full-time, both sides settled for a share of the spoils in what was a fittingly competitive start to the new NPFL campaign.
While Rivers United will feel they could have held onto their early advantage, Remo Stars showed resilience to claw back and ensure they didn’t disappoint their home supporters.
