NPFL: Big Test for Newcomers as Kun Khalifat, Barau FC Face Former Champions in Season Opener

Barau FC and Kun Khalifat FC, making their first-ever appearances in the top flight against former champions, Enyimba and Rangers FC International FC in their opening fixtures.

The 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season will not only be about the marquee fixtures of Matchweek 1 but also about the league’s newcomers who are set for their baptism of fire.

Barau FC and Kun Khalifat FC, making their first-ever appearances in the top flight, will be under the spotlight as they go up against former champions, Enyimba and Rangers FC International FC in their opening fixtures.

Both sides earned promotion from the Nigeria National League (NNL), alongside Warri Wolves and Wikki Tourists, who are returning to the elite division.

Barau FC vs Enyimba

Barau FC will welcome nine-time champions Enyimba to the Sani Abacha Stadium on Sunday in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.

The Kano-based side, under the guidance of experienced coach Ladan Bosso, recruited heavily during the off-season, bringing in proven names such as goalkeeper Yusuf Muhammed, Sunday Anthony, Michael Enaruna, Nura Abdulbari, Samuel Mathias, Mike Zaruma, Kabiru Abdullahi, Emmanuel Okoko Jr, Hillary Ekawu, and Ghanaian midfielder Abraham Nana Kwame.

Nicknamed the Maliya Boys, Barau FC will fancy their chances against Enyimba, who have been relatively quiet in the transfer market after releasing 22 players from last season’s squad.

The People’s Elephant, who finished sixth in the last campaign, are now led by head coach Stanley Eguma, appointed in December 2024.

Eguma has set his sights firmly on silverware or at the very least, a return to continental competition.

“Enyimba as a team have a target, and as a coach, an ambitious one at that, I equally have a target. My target is to win the league or secure a continental ticket, at worst,” Eguma told the club’s media.

The opening-day trip to Kano will provide a real test of Enyimba’s credentials after an inconsistent season that saw them finish 16 points adrift of eventual champions Remo Stars.

Rangers vs Kun Khalifat

Meanwhile, debutants Kun Khalifat FC will make a short trip from their Owerri base to Enugu, where they face former Champions Rangers International in their first-ever NPFL match.

Rangers, who surrendered their title defense last season by finishing 10th, have strengthened their squad with notable signings such as Waheed Adebayo, Ifeanyi Assurance, Daniel Egon Eni, Chidozie Iwundu, Ejike Ikwu, Monday Daniel, Jerry Alex, Chinedu Onah, and the returning Chidiebere Nwobodo after his stint abroad.

Kun Khalifat head into the new season with mixed pre-season results—defeats to Bayelsa United (0-1) and Bendel Insurance (0-4), but draws against Heartland (1-1) and a surprising 3-1 victory over Enyimba.

These results hint that the newcomers could pose a real threat in the Southeast Derby against Rangers.

Making a First Impression

For both Barau FC and Kun Khalifat FC, this weekend presents an opportunity to make a statement in their debut NPFL campaign.

History has shown that newcomers can punch above their weight, just last season, Ikorodu City FC defied early relegation predictions to compete for a continental ticket until the penultimate week of the campaign.

The challenge is huge, but the ambition is clear: the NPFL new boys are determined to announce their arrival in style.
